A) durch das Passivum, nämlich: 1) persönlich, a) durch das bestimmte Tempus, wo dann der beim Aktiv im Deutschen stehende Objektsakkusativ im Lateinischen Nominativ werden muß, z.B. man lobt mich, dich, ihn etc., laudor, laudaris, laudatur etc.: man nennt dich einen Ankläger, accusator nominaris: man geht damit um (man will), id agitur, ut etc.: (er sagte etc.) man gehe damit um (od. man wolle), id agi, ut etc. – Hierher gehören auch die Redensarten: man sagt, daß ich, du, er etc., man glaubt, daß ich, du, er etc., man hält mich, dich, ihn (es) für etc., man befiehlt, daß ich, du etc., die im Latein. ebenso persönlichgebraucht werden müssen, z.B. man sagt, daß er in Rom gewesen sei, ille dicitur Romae fuisse: man sagt, du habest dieses getan, diceris hoc fecisse: man glaubt, ich sei ein Sklave, man hält mich für einen Sklaven, servus existimor: man befahl, daß du zum Konsul erklärt würdest, iussus es renuntiari consul. – Solche Verba u. unpersönliche Redensarten. die selbst keine passive Form zulassen, nehmen einen Infinitiv des Passivs zu sich, z.B. man kann nicht angenehm leben, wenn man nicht tugendhaft lebt, non potest iucunde vivi, nisi cum virtute vivatur; es ist ein wahres Wort, das man zu sagen pflegt etc., verum est illud verbum, quod vulgo dici solet. – Doch steht bei den unpersönlichen Redensarten zuw. auch der Infin. des Aktivs, wobei man sich aliquem denken muß, z.B. es ist töricht, daß man das fürchtet, was nicht vermieden werden kann, stultum est timere id, quod vitari non potest. – b) durch das Partizipium Perfetti, z.B. deine Brüder, von denen man einst eine glänzende politische Stellung erwartet, exspectati ad amplissimam dignitatem fratres.
2) unpersönlich durch die dritte Person Singularis. Hierher gehören alle Verba intransitiva, die in der dritten Person Singularis im Passiv einen Zustand als bestehend angeben, z.B. man lebt, vivitur: man kam nach Rom, Romam ventum est: es wird Abend, man muß nach Hause zurückkehren, iam advesperascit, domum revertendum est: man beneidet [1638] mich, invidetur mihi. – Seltener stehen einige dieser Verba persönlich, z.B. man klatscht mir. Beifall, plaudor.
3) durch Ablativi absoluti, z.B. wenn man das als feststehend annimmt und einräumt. daß es eine göttliche Kraft gebe, die das Leben der Menschen umfaßt, so ist es nicht schwer etc., hoc autem posito atque concesso, esse quandam vim divinam vitam hominum continentem, non difficile est etc.
B) durch das Aktiv und zwar: 1) durch die erste Person Singul., wenn. sie sich selbst nicht auszunehmen hat, z.B. da sieht man, daß du hoch hinaus willst, video te alte spectare.
2) durch die dritte Person im Singular und zwar: a) durch unpersönliche Verba aktiva, als da sind: man muß, oportet: man darf, licet: man beliebt, hat beliebt, placet, placuit usw. – b) in der Redensart »sagt man«, durch inquit (als Parenthese), wo man ein aliquis, adversarius etc. hinzudenken muß.
3) durch die dritte Person im Plural, wenn man irgend ein Subjekt, gew. das allg. homines, hinzudenken kann, z.B. man lobt den König, laudant (sc. homines od. auctores etc.) regem: man sagt, s. sagen.
4) durch die dritte Person Singularis od. Pluralis, indem man den Satz umkehrt, so daß das deutsche »man«, das immer Subjekt ist, in das Verhältnis des Objekts kommt, worauf es deutsch und lateinisch wegfällt, z.B. durch Sparsamkeitwird man reich, d. h. Sparsamkeit macht reich, *parsimonia divites facit: durch Reichtum wird man geizig, d.i. der Reichtum macht geizig, *divitiae efficiunt avaros.
5) durch die erste Person Pluralis des Indikativs oder Konjunktivs, wenn der Redende sich selbst mit unter den unbekannten Subjekten nennen kann, z.B. was man wünscht, glaubt man gern, quae volumus, credimus libenter: man denke sich (setze den Fall), die Sache sei wahr, fingamus od. faciamus rem veram esse.
6) durch die zweite Person Singularis des Indikativs, Konjunktivs oder Imperativs, bei lebhaften Ermahnungen, Aufforderungen und Darstellungen, wo dann auch in den folgenden Sätzen, die dazu gehören, diese Person beibehalten werden muß. z.B. man sieht Gott nicht, doch ist er als Gott aus seinen Werken zu erkennen, deum non vides, tamen ut deum agnoscis ex operibus eius: was man tut, muß man mit Bedacht tun, agere decet, quod agas, considerate: man denke sich (man setze den Fall), es werde jetzt einer ein Weiser, finge aliquem nunc fieri sapientem. – Hauptsächlich steht die zweite Person Singularis des Konjunktivs da, wo wir sagen: man konnte, sollte, man hätte können, sollen, z.B. man konnte sehen, hätte sehen können, videres: man hätte wissen sollen, können, scires: man sollte glauben, putares.
7) durch das Partizipium Präsentis im Maskulinum, in allgemeinen Sätzen wie: wenn man das erste verfolgt, so ist es löblich, beim zweiten und dritten stehen zu bleiben, prima sequentem honestum est in secundis et tertiis consistere.
C) Ist das deutsche »man« im Lateinischen [1639] Subjekt des Infinitivs, so wird es nicht besonders ausgedrückt, z.B. es ist menschlich, daß man dem Freunde verzeiht, ignoscere amico humanum est. – Doch beim Infinitiv esse u. bei denjenigen Verbis, die im Passiv zwei Nominative, des Subjekts und Prädikats, bei sich haben, als: videri, existimari, iudicari etc., steht wenigstens der Akkusativ des Prädikats, z.B. der größte Reichtum ist, daß man mit seiner Lage zufrieden ist, maximae sunt divitiae contentum suis rebus esse: man hielt es vorderhand für passend, daß man Konsuln wählte, in praesentia placuit consules fieri: es sei zugegeben, daß man unglücklich sei, liceat miseros esse.
